Candidate: Arne Carlson Position: Governor Document: Leading Minnesota Forward E-Released: 8/24/1994 Leading Minnesota Forward Elect Arne Carlson Joanne Benson Governor Lt. Governor Minnesotans are in the midst of a very important battle over the future of this state. On the one side stand the DFL leaders of the Legislature, along with the many special interest they cater to, who continue to work for higher taxes and increased state spending. On the other, stand Arne Carlson, Joanne Benson, the Republicans in the Legislature, and every Minnesotan who is tired of seeing their taxes raised just so the DFL can spend more money on its friends. Our fight. Our team. Carlson-Benson. When Governor Carlson and Sen. Benson took office in 1991, Minnesota was mired in a $2 billion deficit created by Rudy Perpich, Mike Freeman and the rest of the DFL spendthrifts. Less than four years later, Governor Carlson, Sen. Benson and their Republican colleagues have helped give Minnesotans a $623 million surplus. Arne Carlson and Joanne Benson want to continue the record of achievement and reform the Carlson Administration has set in motion. They need your support in their effort to lead Republicans to victory in November. Here are just a few examples of that success: Taxes: With the support of legislators like Joanne Benson, Governor Carlson has successfully crushed DFL attempts to raise more the $1.8 billion in new taxes. Crime: With Joanne Benson serving as the chair of his Anti-Crime Task Force, Governor Carlson enacted one of Minnesota's toughest crime laws when he signed the 1992 Safe Communities Act. That law provides stiffer sentences for violent offenders, including perpetrators of drive-by shootings. Welfare Reform: In 1994, Governor Carlson proposed the nations's most comprehensive and thoughtful welfare reform plan -- a plan that emphasizes work and independence, not a check and dependence. Joanne Benson chaired the Republican Welfare Reform Task Force that joined in support of the Governor's proposal. ---------------------------------- Carlson/Benson Volunteer Committee 1821 University Avenue West Suite 135 South St. Paul, Minnesota 55104 Phone: (612) 646-0468 Fax: (612) 646-3018 Prepared by the Carlson/Benson Volunteer Committee Wheelock Whitney & Chris Fritsche, Co-Chairs
