Executive Director, Minnesota E-Democracy
http://freenet.msp.mn.us/govt/e-democrac

I've been active in community telecommunications for about 15 years:

Helped organize the Minneapolis Telecommunications Network in the
1980's. MTN started as a cable TV public access center
and now inlcudes an internet service for Minnesota
non-profits and governments.

Lobbied the Minnesota Legislature on public interest issues in
telecommunications 1993 to 1995.

Got involved with Minnesota E-Democracy in 1995. Now part
time executive director--anyone have any ideas were
to get money for electronic democracy projects? Minnesota
E-Democracy is a nonprofit corporation in Minnesota and we
have applied for IRS 501.c.3 tax exempt status.

I am preparing a study on how issue groups use the Internet to conduct
issue campaigns. I am also working on how candidate campaigns use the
Internet in their campaigns. Right now, I webmaster two sites on
politics. The Campaigner (http://gwis2.circ.gwu.edu/~wabranty) and the
Kentucky Democrat Activist Website
(http://gwis2.circ.gwu.edu/~wabranty/ky1.html). The geographic area
that I want to concentrate on is nationwide.

I believe that in small town government, better decisions are made when
more people participate at town council meeting and at other civic forums.
So, as a first step, we're trying to motivate more participation by making
public notices incl. council agendas, minutes, town charter, contacts,
etc.) available to residents on our web site. This election year I would
like to carry on an electronic discussion about issues and candidates on
our county ballot (Montgomery County MD). To start the discussion we'd
like to get permission to publish analyses of the issues and candidates
developed by well-known "non-partisan" groups, such as the League of Women
Voters.

Elaborating on TestBet to make it the base of a democratic voting

votes are given weights by the voter according to their expertise, faking

some small experiments have been done with it on internet. I'm looking for
programming assistance to make it a Java applet.

The reason I subscribed to this mailing-list is that I have
always enjoyed the electoral process. In this(my) country
which I believe to be the greatest democracy on Earth it is
fascinating.

I have been an officer in a political organization on the
local level but due to time constraints I have to take a
more hands-off role.

Electronic democracy interests me because it's an efficient way to access
and exchange information.

I am the owner of Washington Initiatives Now (WIN) and do grassroots
organizing for citizen groups. I have successfully placed seven statewide
ballot measures before Washington state voters since 1990. I have done
numerous city and county measures. Issues range for term limits to
affordable denture care. Prior to WIN, I spent 12 years as a
photojournalist working on six daily newspapers. I'm a 1977 graduate from
the University of Missouri School of Journalism.

Additionally, I am the director of Citizens for Leaders with Ethics and
Accountability Now! (CLEAN). This is a statewide, IRS approved non-profit
organization supported solely by volunteerism and donations from
indivduals.

I'm most interested in tracking citizen initiative activities in other
states.

My interest in electronic "democracy" is to help to inform people of
their choices of candidates, and in that way return control of people's
lives to them rather than ceding control to government.
My current project is a campaign for the Indiana State Senate seat from
District 32.
I'm interested in focusing my attention on the Indiana/Midwest area.

My interest in electronic democracy: Since the late 60s
I have been working with consumer applications and
citizen access to societal information, in many of the
videotex and, later, TCP/IP surroundings in Europe.
Background: I have published on citizen participation
in the public political process, starting 1971.
I consider myself a citizen friend, and have concentrated
on supporting measures for empowerment of citizens and
their dialogue with public information systems, as well as
with communications with other fellow citizens.

To start with, I am primarily interested in European
democratic application activities.

I'm interested in how community computer networks can be used to
stimulate political participation in the physicial community. I would
like to see the community net be used to build consensus on political
issues, to post questions to and answers from political candidates, etc.
I'm a doctoral student in Information Science. This semester I am doing a
pilot study with the local community net training people to build their
own web pages about politics - what they think the most important issues
are, what kinds of political informaiton they'd like to share. Since I"m
in school I'm kind of trapped inthe midwest but that can stretch from St.
Louis to Chicago to COlumbus Ohio to Nashville Tennessee.

I am interested in electronic democracy as a way of helping citizens
reconnect with politics. Most people seem alienated, cynical, and with a
feeling of powerlessness. I am interested in using the Internet to build
political communities that can network together and make a real difference
on the local, state and national level.

Since 1995, I have been involved in networking with and trying to organize
Democrats and progressives on the Internet. My newsletter, the Internet
Democrat, has a readership of more than 10,000. I have correspondents in
every state. I believe the Internet will see the development of surprising
new coalitions of liberals and conservatives among the techno-savvy.

My interest in electronic democracy has to do with the implementation of
existing (and future) technology. This would, in turn, give politicians
an IMMEDIATE feedback for those things which are still in think-tanks or
early stages of bill-writing.

Seems like there is an inordinate waste of time in hashing over
legislation which the people don't really WANT or NEED. Getting this
feedback (and, hopefully, implementing electronic voting!) would cut back
this waste of time and money.

A good example of this has to do with the current witch-hunt regarding
Starr and the Whitewater fiasco.

My name is Louise Johnson. I live in the Seattle area, and my email

interest groups, but am interested in working in the area of campaign
finance reform. I prefer to decide each issue seperately but usually
end up voting Democrat.

Subject: Intro: Full Name, Geog. Area, E-mail

To whom it may concern:

I presently reside in Hampden, Maine USA.

My major political/electoral affilation is with the Democraitic Party. I
have been involved in standard electoral politics for the past 20+ years
and am presently running for the Maine House of Representatives in what is
assumed to be a heavily Republican district.

I have also been involved, at various times, with the Democratic Socialist
of America, the Green Party, and various peace and justice issues. However
my primary academic interest is not so much in the decisions made as in
how they are made. I believe that the process can define the product. This
to some extent explains my interest in 'electronic democracy.' I believe
it has the potential to transform the the dialog and the process.

My area of geographic interest is New England and the Maritimes, with an
obvious emphasis on Maine.

Yours
