I've been an activist for 35 years, starting in the earliest periods of
the student movement.

Since 1973, I've been in Philadelphia, working primarily with groups at
the neighborhood level through the Institute for the Study of Civic
Values. These include civic associations, community development
organizations, and human service activists working with the poor. In the
70's, we built a neighborhoods' movement here. In the 80's, I was elected
to City Council at-large on a "neighborhood agenda," and subsequently
became director of Philadelphia's Office of Housing and Community
Development.

In 1992, I returned to ISCV full-time, in part to help neighborhood
activists learn how to use the Internet. Over the past two years, we've
established "Neighborhoods Online," a web site for ISCV, a national
"civic-values" email list, and a project in Philadelphia that's brought
more than 100 organizations onto LibertyNet in the past year. In
September, O'Reilly and Associates will publish "NetActivism: How Citizens
Use the Internet," that I've written to describe these efforts. The
"e-democracy" project is described in the book.

My interests here are national.

For the past year I have been working in the public relations field, and
will be returning to school soon to finish my degree. I am an active
republican, and am currently devoting my energy to the Dole/Kemp ticket
and to a republican gubenatorial candidate here in Washington State. I am
very interested in politics, possibly as a career, and would like to
explore how the internet can and will affect the political process in the
future. It may be that mailing lists such as this will be the driving
force behind politics on the internet. I am impressed and fascinated by
the diversity I have seen on this list through the introductions, and
excited to participate.

ways to get them online. I am a co-facilitator of act.cuts.ont an
electronic conference created to organize the fightback against the
Ontario government's social policies.

Michael Carr, Northern Virginia, Washington, DC Metropolitan area,
mcarr@erols.com.

I am affiliated with the Arlington Young Democrats and the Arlington
Democratic Committee.

Electronic Democracy is very important to increasing awareness and
understanding of our democracy. I helped organize a training session on
web page development and the use of e-mail to organize groups of people to
action.

I am working on a door to door voter registration project. So far my
group has knocked on over 1200 doors and registered 25 people. We have
handed out over 100 voter registration applications.

The geographic area that I am interested in focusing my activities in is
Northern Virginia.

My area of interest is presidential rhetoric, especially how the new
forms and genres of public discourse impact on both the form and the
substance of presidential and presidential-candidate discourse. I will
be giving a public lecture on this topic at SUNY-Oswego titled "Reach Out
and Elect Someone: Politics and Postmodernism" near the end of October.
I have been very active in college/university governance and have
presented my work on political discourse at national, regional and state
organizations of rhetorical and communication scholars.

As senior associate at the Benton Foundation, I focus on best
practices of communications technology by nonprofits, with the aim
to document and model them for use by other nonprofits. I am
participating in this list, therefore, as an observer to see how
the process works, and lessons that can be learned from your
experiences. Before joining Benton in March 1996, I was Assistant
Director for seven years at the Institute for Global Communications,
home of the nonprofit internet services, PeaceNet, EcoNet,
ConflictNet, LaborNet and WomensNet.

No URL (whatever that might mean)
Affiliation: Active in motorcycle politics (voluntary) and countryside
access for recreation & sport with motors (paid), throughout UK but mainly
England & Wales. Scotland & Northern Ireland have very different laws, as
well as cultures. Interests: Motorcycling in its many forms, minorities
and how they ca ninfluence 'democratic' politics, effect of new
communications on political and thought processes, (without Gutenberg, no
Luther), typography (use and abuse of the apostrophe).

In the UK and EC motorcyclists have achieved political clout through being
active, getting noticed, and particularly from not being 'men in suits'. I
hope to develop this process using e-mail etc, but obviously if too many
others use 'our' methods it might weaken our effect. Or might it make
politicians more eager to listen to us all?
I hope this is useful

Subject: Introductions--Rick Blum, future high school government teacher

I am Rick Blum, and while I have not been politically active in the last
few years, I used to be an active participant in the political process
and seek to return to that activism.

I am also a future high school civics teacher and look to this list to
explore the many ways individuals communicate, organize and influence the
political process. In the past I've volunteered on campaigns for local
candidates in California and did some campus organizing for a boycott of
California table grapes. As a graduate student in Indiana, I've led a
less-political, cloistered life. I'm interested in broadening
participation levels, although I realize that's quite vague. More later
as the discussion gets rolling.

(just
forming a company called RightNet)

My main interest is to empower more people through communications. I
setup and with the local UWSA Chapter sponsor 5 mail lists. In 1993 I
assisted in getting SV-PAL started out here. For $20/year (at that time)
we offered a shell menu access to the internet attracting over 3000
members by June 1994. "If you shopped in a supermarket, we wanted to put
you on the Internet!"

Several political objectives have been achieved or are being worked on by
the uwsa lists:

A member of the uwsa@shell.portal.com list led a campaign
known as "Ban Bribery Now!" that after a two year fight resulted
in passage of a bill to ban gifts to Congress Persons and their
staffs.

A member of the same list from the state of Washington became
alarmed at the abuses of power by Foley and with the help of
others on the list initiated "De-Foly-Ate" (DF8) which later
involved the NRA and other organizations to unelect a sitting
Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1994.

A Campaign Finance Reform list (cfr@uwsa.com) is used to achieve
passage of California Proposition 206 "Campaign Finance Reform"
coordinating the activities of UWSA, League of Woman Voters,
Common Cause and AARP. Although initially meant for the Calif.
activity, it now has a national membership.

A member of the local UWSA Chapter has funded the development
of UVote. UVote ( http://www.uvote.com ) is a WWW based forum
for Americans to define issues that need to be addressed and
possible solutions. The greatest benefit will be a place for
Americans to see the concensus of themselves. Of all the
interests in politics it is the citizens that are the least
organized and aware of their concensus.

I'll probably be a lurker here for a while.

My interest in electronic democracy is from both a social science and
activist perspective. My first work on political campaigns started at the
age of 8, handing out matchbooks with my father for a local city council
candidate in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Since 1978, I have been employed
by a variety of political campaigns, from local, state-wide (in
Massachusetts), and national campaigns. Although my political activities
are necessarily "curtailed" presently (I am a third year Public Policy
Ph.D. student -- with a dissertation topic weighing heavily on my mind), I
have done some ad hoc work for the Re-Elect Congressman Joe Moakley
Committee. Being a recent transplant to Virginia (12/94), I am quite
interested in both Massachusetts and Virginia electoral activities.

Incidently, I have been "on the Net" since May 1981 -- that's right...15+
years...my, how things have changed. :-)

Interest: To see how the Internet, and related technologies, is used in
the upcoming US Presidential Elections. So much has been made of the
On-line technology in US Politics in the past year (CDA, wiretaps,
Privacy, etc) that the on-line issues may become an issue in various
congressional campaigns.

Television, especially younger voters tv ads, were instrumental in the
last Presidential campaing, I want to use this (and other lists) to keep
an eye on the electronic electorate.

I am the President of a nonprofit, public access center in Boston
dedicated to lowering all barriers to this technology. We are open six
days a week for walk-in traffic, provide scheduled classes, and develop
collaborative activities with other community groups. Our volunteers
number over 70 and we expect our second year of operations to really put
us on the map. We'd like to develop an organizational theme of electronic
citizenry so that our visitors are made aware of the power of this
technology as a democratic tool regardless of the reason behind their
visit. I'm hoping this list will give me some good tips on how best
present this theme.

I am a political campaign manager. I have worked in many states, but I
tend to prefer the South, and am currently working in NC, SC, and am doing
general consulting in a few other southern states. I have worked in
every level of political campaigns, from county commission to
Presidential, but I perfer and have come to feel that the most important
races I do are state legislative bodies, in trying to maintain or gain
Democratic majorities in one or both Houses. Although I work in the
South, I have friends that are consulting across the country, so I am
interested in political campaigns across the U.S. Between elections (and
during) I work with pro-choice groups and womens organizations to train
campaign staff and volunteers.

Since the Internet is a continually expanding venue for
communication, it is also becoming more and more used for political
purposes (what an understatement!) This forum will, hopefully, address
the issues that this creates but also discuss broader issues of election
administration and electoral systems. My interest is in elections across
the United States as well as internationally.

Hi. My name is Kevin Wolf. I have been walking precincts as a
volunteer in different campaigns for 15 years. In recent years I have
been working to organize coalitions in both my local counties and in
other areas. I believe that we can use old fashion neighbor to neighbor
door knocking and phone calling with high tech data base development to
create a new type of electoral machine. I hope that this list will
advance the discussion on how to organize long-term and effective
election coalitions.
