Frank Germann      Closing Statement

The Libertarian Party is the only political party that recognizes an
individual's right to run his own life and his own property as he sees
fit. We deny the government any right to interfere with peaceful
people.

The government has no right to tell us what to do and what we can NOT
do. All other political parties grant to the government an almost
unlimited right to interfere with people's lives. As a result, we
see, today, a government with laws and regulations that are so massive
and so comprehensive that no one person can understand them. We go
through our lives not knowing from minute to minute if we are
violating some obscure code.

But the government is not satisfied with merely telling us what to do
and what to not do. It also insists that we give up a very large
portion of our personal wealth to further these authoritarian ends.
Governments everywhere insist on the right to drag its citizens off to
wars that they don't believe in, to tell them who they are allowed to
marry, what professions they are allowed to practice, and what
medicines and drugs they are allowed to use. They also force them to
go to school for the required number of years, regardless of whether
or not they are thereby getting an education. They force them into
jury duty for little or no pay while attorneys, judges, and other
officials make substantial rewards for less demanding tasks.

Our government has not yet initiated a system of internal passports
and universal government identity papers, but recent developments give
us reason to worry. Any government that has the power to give us
everything, must also have the power to take it away. Libertarians
abhor the continuous attacks against individual freedom and
initiative. We insist that the government be limited to its necessary
functions of preserving public order and protecting us from domestic
and foreign aggression.

To preserve us from runaway government, Libertarians propose to
drastically reduce the taxing power of all levels of government and to
limit government functions to those that protect peoples rights,
freedom, and property from aggression, fraud, and theft. For this we
need police protection, courts, and prisons, and not much else.

The first step in achieving the objectives is a drastic reduction of
taxes. We propose to follow the lead of New Hampshire and eliminate
the state income and sales tax. This will reduce the revenue of the
state government by about two thirds. There will still be adequate
revenue from things like gas taxes, vehicle taxes, user taxes and
gambling revenues to fund an adequate level of government. If you
