Norm Coleman      Response 1

Question 1: What must the governor do, if anything, to head off or prepare for a possible computer systems distruption as a result of the Year 2000 compter bug?

My administration will continue the vigilant, forward-looking approach
to technology that Governor Arne Carlson has embraced. Governor Carlson
founded the Minnesota Office of Technology in 1996, which has helped
move Minnesota to eighth best in the nation for the integration of
information technology into government.

Keeping Minnesota on the forefront of technological advancements
includes protecting our systems from Y2K disruptions. A legislative
task force is currently examining the problems state agencies may
encounter as all agencies move to Y2K compliance. The Office of
Technology has developed a Website to help local government, businesses
and citizens check all the ways they might be affected by the Y2K bug
(http://www.internetcenter.state.mn.us/y2k.htm). I will vigorously
support the efforts of the Office of Technology and act quickly to
resolve any problems that are encountered.
