Hubert H. Humphrey      Response 6

Question 6:
Tell us why you would make the best Governor for the State of
Minnesota.  What kind of "team" would you put together if elected?
Also, what is the worst idea you have heard one of your opponents in
this race support, and why?

In your rebuttal include a response to this question:  If you face an
endorsement or primary challenge, why would you be the best candidate
for your party?   In closing, please include information on how
interested readers can contact your campaign to volunteer and get more
information.

HUMPHREY Response 6:

People in Minnesota have worked hard for the success we enjoy; it's
something we should be proud of.  I want to build on that success and
ensure a more secure and prosperous future.  That's why I am running for
governor.

To be #1, we must rid lives of violence in our lives.

As Governor, I'll crackdown on gang violence, felons with guns and
domestic violence.  But I also recognize fighting crime has to include
prevention.  So I will commit our state to early childhood intervention,
tutoring and counseling.

To be #1, we must offer our children the best education.

As Governor, I will work to improve standards and testing - at every
step along the way.  And if a child falls behind, we must have tutoring
available to help them.

We must have smaller class sizes. And we must begin education earlier;
pre-kindergarten is the best investment this state can make.

We must make sure the door of colleges or community colleges are open to
everyone.  And finally, we must ensure that our school to work programs
help students make the transition to work.

It's not enough to pledge yourself to be the education governor;  it's
time to make that promise a reality.

To be #1, we must ensure our economy remains strong.

As Governor, we can cut taxes responsibly - targeted to help working
families.  But that alone is not enough to ensure growth and economic
prosperity.  We must also improve our schools; encourage new businesses
to locate in Minnesota and grow here; and make sure our quality of life
- from clean drinking water to better management of our overrun highway
system - is #1.

I know how good we are - and how great our state can be.  I am running
to make that promise a reality.
