Allen Quist       Rebuttal 6

Question 6:
Tell us why you would make the best Governor for the State of
Minnesota.  What kind of "team" would you put together if elected?
Also, what is the worst idea you have heard one of your opponents in
this race support, and why?

In your rebuttal include a response to this question:  If you face an
endorsement or primary challenge, why would you be the best candidate
for your party?   In closing, please include information on how
interested readers can contact your campaign to volunteer and get more
information.

QUIST Rebuttal 6:

Freedom requires the open exchange of information.  For that
reason, I would like to thank E-Democracy for holding this debate.  In
so doing, the free exchange of information has not only been advanced,
but it has been advanced in an innovative manner which suggests that
the information age of the 21st century can also be a golden age of
freedom and opportunity.

I am personally appreciative of having had the opportunity to
bring forward information and recommendations regarding what I believe
is the primary issue facing state government today, namely, true
reform in our system of education.

The reason I have made education reform the centerpiece of my
campaign is because of my conviction that the Graduation Standards,
part two (Profile of Learning) is something other than true reform.  I
am convinced that this program is actually a radical experiment that
will substantially damage the educational opportunities of our
children.

The dumbing down aspect of the Profile of Learning was
described to me a few days ago by two high school students who told of
their experiences in completing their first Profile "package"  of
assignments in their senior level art class.  Their first observation
was that the package was so time consuming that it prevented the class
from completing even half of the course content required by the
syllabus.  "We were robbed," they said, "of over half of our art
class."

Secondly, they said, the best students did all the work in
this group project (collaborative) while the other 18 students in the
class pretty muchtagged along for the ride.  Such is the nature, they
believe, of large group projects at the high school level.

I recommend that we stop this nonsense and instead promote
education strategies that can be proven to work.
